Eel Ground First Nation
I am a First Nations Mi'kmaq / Irish woman, born and raised in rural Ottawa, Ontario. I am a member of the Eel Ground ~Natoaganeg~ First Nation in northeastern New Brunswick. My mother (Barnaby) was born and raised in Eel Ground, and I hold it near and dear to me.
In 2003, I visited Lennox Island, PEI, where some of my ancestors come from, and bought a piece of pottery with the Mi’kmaq Star etched in it... Since that visit, I have been in love with the Mi'kmaq Star and eager to learn it's history and significance for the Mi'kmaq people. . I have had a dream of finding ways to celebrate Mi'kmaq designs in a more current way and with the help of my husband and my dad (and of course my momma!), I am able to be creative and I am very excited to share this love with you through my wooden art pieces.
My father has been my mentor the last 3 years and guides me through the various tools and how to build. I wouldn't be where I am today with out his patience and guidance.
Each piece that I make has been handcrafted, using quality milled wood from a local wood mill, or salvaged through various means and then hand prepared. Through all of my work you will see a great care and love put into each piece.. If I am not happy with it, it doesn't go out the door until it is fixed as reasonably as it can be. I have branched out into geometric or mosaic wooden wall art, hand scrolled words and signs, as well as home decor through a line of custom cushion covers, wall canvas and toddler t-shirts.
I like to think that my wooden stars blend a bit of my rustic charm with the more traditional symbol. I am always changing the designs, so check back every once in a while in case there is something new!
